Graph of connections
On no scale can you rely on history just unfolding as a single narrative one event after another. Instead there are historical entities that interact across space and time. As a consequence, it is more appropriate to record this process in the form of a graph, i.e. objects and their properties with links between them. On xplris, this graph of connections is used to, for example:
- Objects and their properties can be linked for different purposes:
- Objects can be linked to describe their relationship. For instance, France is a member of the European Union.
- Events are linked to properties if they are causally responsible for the change of value. For instance, "Ratification of the Treaty of Bucharest" is responsible for the change of name from "Principality of Bulgaria" to "Kingdom of Bulgaria". This name change is not simply recorded with the date value, instead there exists an event with the date as a property and the event is linked to the property to encode the change.
